Two weeks with the Google Pixel Fold made me glad I didn’t buy it, but hear me out before you judge. Some of what you’re about to read is going to make it sound like I hate the Google Pixel Fold, but this is not the case. I’ve spent about two weeks with the phone, and there are multiple elements I really like (and even love). However, this is an $1,800 smartphone, and when something costs that much, it needs to come close to being exactly right—especially when there is a really fantastic competing product selling for the same price. By the end of my time with the Pixel Fold, I had reached a surprising but very happy conclusion.
The Upsides of the Google Pixel Fold
Let’s start with the good stuff. The Google Pixel Fold is a marvel of engineering. The foldable OLED display is simply stunning. Watching videos and playing games on this device is a visual treat, and the crease in the middle, while noticeable, didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. The software optimizations for the foldable form factor are also commendable. Apps adapt well to the different screen sizes, and the multitasking features are genuinely useful.
The camera system on the Pixel Fold is top-notch, as expected from Google. The photos are crisp, the colors are vibrant, and low-light performance is impressive. If mobile photography is a priority for you, this device won’t disappoint.
The Downside of the Google Pixel Fold
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room—the price. At $1,800, the Pixel Fold is in the same ballpark as some other premium flagship smartphones, but it falls short in some key areas. The battery life is mediocre at best, barely lasting me through a full day of use. The phone also feels a bit fragile, and I can’t help but worry about the long-term durability of a foldable device.
Furthermore, the software experience, while generally smooth, had some occasional glitches and hiccups that I didn’t expect from a device in this price range. It’s clear that Google still has some work to do in this department.
The Surprising
By the end of my two-week trial with the Google Pixel Fold, I found myself torn. On one hand, I marveled at the innovation and the moments of brilliance this phone offers. On the other hand, I couldn’t ignore its flaws, especially considering its steep price tag.
In the end, I didn’t regret not buying the Pixel Fold. Instead, I felt grateful that I had the opportunity to experience it without committing to such a significant investment. If you’re a die-hard Google fan with a penchant for cutting-edge tech, the Pixel Fold might still be worth considering. However, for most consumers, there are more practical and well-rounded options available at this price point.
